Child Psychiatry: Why Listening to Young Minds Early Matters
Dr. Manas Team14 May 2026
Half of all lifetime mental illness begins before age 14. Early, gentle psychiatric care can change a child's entire trajectory.
Children rarely arrive in clinic saying "I am depressed" or "I have OCD." They arrive as falling grades, irritability, tantrums, refusal to go to school, sleep changes, or sudden physical complaints. Recognising these as possible signs of underlying psychiatric or neurodevelopmental conditions is the first job of child psychiatry.
At Manas, we treat the full paediatric spectrum — ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, oppositional defiant disorder, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, childhood depression and anxiety, school refusal and enuresis.
Our approach is family-centred. We work with parents, teachers and the child together. Interventions are mostly behavioural; medications are used judiciously and only when truly indicated.
The earlier we engage, the lighter the touch needed. A child who is helped at 9 rarely becomes an adult in crisis at 29.
